Cheap Semrush Alternative for Freelancers and Students (2026)
Semrush is one of the most complete SEO platforms, but the price is a problem for freelancers and students. On the official pricing page, the Pro plan lists at about $139.95 per month on monthly billing, Guru at $249.95 and Business at $499.95. Annual billing lowers each of these a little, but you still pay a lot up front. Prices change, so check Semrush’s own pricing page before you decide.
If you only run a few client sites, that is hard to justify. This guide covers the realistic ways to get the same kind of data for less, and what you give up with each.
Option 1: Use free tools for the basics
Google Search Console and Google Keyword Planner cost nothing and show your own real search data. They are enough for a new site that needs to find out which pages get impressions. They do not show competitor traffic, backlinks or keyword difficulty, which is what most people buy Semrush for.
Option 2: Cheaper paid SEO tools
Several smaller tools offer keyword research and site audits at lower monthly prices. Their databases are usually smaller, so competitor and backlink numbers can be less complete than Semrush. Always check the free trial against a keyword you already know well.
Option 3: Shared access through a group buy
A group buy lets several people share the cost of one premium subscription. That is how SEO BD Tools offers Semrush and other tools at a fraction of the official price. The trade-off is that access is shared, so daily limits and fair use apply. Read our Semrush pricing breakdown and the Semrush group buy guide to see how it works.
Which option fits you?
- Student or beginner: start with Search Console and Keyword Planner.
- Freelancer with a few clients: shared access gives you the full tool for a small monthly cost.
- Agency with many projects and team seats: an official plan may be safer, because you get your own login and support.
Checklist before you pay for any shared tool
- Is the price in your currency clear, with no hidden charges?
- Are the daily limits written down? Ours are on the limits page.
- Is there a refund rule and a support contact you can reach?
- Will you use it every week? If not, pay month to month.
Where to go next
See the daily limits for each tool, compare plans and prices, or read more in our guides. If a tool in your plan stops working and we cannot fix it or give you access to it, you are covered by our refund policy.
